This is the 3rd Viva examination i have attended since the beginning of the academic year, very useful experience. T.  even gave me the idea about writing  paper about this (i.e making a list around the potential questions that might be asked during a viva) which i think would be useful to many students, although the whole matter really depends on who are the examiners.

Here are some questions that i recorded from this Viva :

1. Could you sum up what this Thesis is about? What is its contribution?

2. How you do see your stance as a researcher (v. using the word ‘bias’)

3. What is unique in that particular supervisory relationship as opposed to other type of relationships, as it comes out from your findings?

4. What could be the contribution of your research towards the theory/literature about the ‘working alliance’?

5. How do you think your research paricipant’s personal issues/difficulties may have influenced what they reported to you during the interviews?

6. Can you give us some significant examples from your data?

7. A lot of your literature draws from psychodynamic theory and yet all your participants where of humanistic background. Why didnt you actively seek for some psychodynamic practitioners?

8. What about involving ‘X’ and ‘Z’ (writers) in your literature review

9. What do you mean by the term ‘X’ in your Thesis (define certain concepts)

10. What do you think is the role of ‘learning’ in supervision? What would be a meaningful learning experience (give example) in supervision?

11. All your participants have been female. If you had all or some male participants, what do you think would have happened? (discourse around gender)

12. Talking about the editing of the Thesis (how big or small each section is to create a good enough synthesis)

13. Suggestion to summarise a few points at the final section of the Thesis. Discussion around whether it’ s good to present findings and discussion together or separate

14. Write a page about the impact of the research on the researcher

15. Is there something else you would like to say or that we haven’t asked and you consider important?
